New Italy Museum Incorporated

‘The New Italy Museum was developed as a tribute to the courage and strength of those pioneering families with the purpose to pass on their spiritual legacy to future generations. The New Italy settlement was built upon dreams, dreams broken and dreams made. It is the story of a group of Italian immigrants who battled great odds, leaving an imprint of success and prosperity, helping to shape the Northern Rivers as it is today. The New Italy Museum Complex is recognized as representing not only Italians in Australia, but their achievements and accomplishments, a well as the joining together of the Italian and non Italian community to recognize and commemorate the contributions of those past and present.  The New Italy Museum Complex also incorporates the New Italy Cafe for delicious coffee and scrumptious cuisine.  The Gurrigai Aboriginal Arts and Crafts Gallery has added a new dimension to the New Italy museum complex. At New Italy we have now, side by side, elements of two ancient cultures which have evolved through thousands of years of human history on the opposite sides of the globe. The intercultural exchanges will generate reciprocal appreciation, understanding, respect and goodwill. The Park of Peace’ was established in 1993 to commemorate contributors to the cause of international peace.  A permanent exhibition ‘recognising our contribution’ - a collection of the stories of 30 Australian families of Italian origin who settled in the district during the period from 1920 until 1960. Family names involved in the settling of the district include Zulpo, Bolzicco, Donadel, Morelli, Pagotto. The display consists of 68 laminated panels with history records and photographs, plus 8 blown up photos of groups of pioneers and some items of art work.  Open 9.00am - 5.00pm everyday.  Contact Details: New Italy Museum Incorporated 8275 Eural Road, Pacific Highway Woodburn, NSW 2472 Telephone: 02 - 6682 2622 Fax: 02 - 6624 5155 Email: .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) Website: www.new-italy.com

Wilsons River Experience Walk

Visitors to Lismore are invited to take a stroll in Riverside Park to visit the three interpretive panels featured in a series of heritage story sites along the riverbank. The panels represent shared information of landscape and settlement of the city and district.  The sites are called ‘Galamah - Living Together,’ Mirring - River Crossings’ and ‘Burbang Mah - Gathering Place.’ The Galamah panels tell some of the story of pre and post European settlement and are installed not far from where the first European settlement was built in the area and near a former permanent campsite of the Widjabul people. The Mirring panels focus on the river and how it has been used by both cultures over time. The Burbang Mah panels highlight the location of community celebrations through time.  The panels are billboard sized installations offering visitors a better understanding of not only the history of the European and Asian settlement of the region but they also depict the Bundjalung stories of the Dreamtime, celebrate Widjabul culture and paint a picture of the Indigenous lifestyle and how it interwove with European and Asian settlement.  Contact Details: Wilsons River Experience Walk Riverside Park Lismore, NSW 2480 Toll Free: 1300 369 795 Telephone: 02 - 6626 0100 Email: .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) Website: www.visitlismore.com.au

Koala Care Centre in Lismore

The Lismore region has one of the highest populations of Koalas in NSW, with an estimated 3500. But the native creature is threatened by many things including disease, loss of environment, bushfires, domestic animals and development.  The Lismore Friends of the Koala group have cared for hundreds of Koalas and have raised money to set up a Koala Hospital and tree nursery.  Local vets donate their time to care for the sick and injured Koalas. The Koalas are placed in the nursery temporarily before being released back to their natural environment and visitors are welcome to wander through the nursery and see the Koalas. If volunteers are on hand, they will be more than happy to discuss Koalas and how people can help save them.  The Lismore Visitor Information Centre on 02 6622 0122 also has an array of information on Koalas.  Guided Tours: Monday to Friday at 10.00am & 2.00pm and Saturday at 10.00am.  Tour cost $3.00 per person or $10.00 per family. Accessible at all times   Contact Details: Koala Care Centre in Lismore Rifle Range Road Lismore, NSW 2480 Telephone: 02 - 6622 1233 Email: .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) Website: www.nor.com.au/community/koala
