The Byron Bay Film Festival is an initiative of the Byron Community and Cultural Centre and local filmmakers. The Byron Bay and Northern NSW region is home to many filmmakers and so when the inaugural Byron Bay Film Festival was held in February 2006 we focused solely on Australian films and the back catalogue of our local filmmakers. Byron Bay is a magnet for people from all around the globe and so it seemed fitting that BBFF should metamorphosis into an International Film Festival in its second year.

In 2007 our festival featured over 100 films from 24 different countries, including 46 Australian premieres and 15 world premieres. Byron Bay’s international reputation encouraged filmmakers from China, Sri Lanka, the USA & the UK to attend the festival.

Byron Bay Writers Festival

Dates: 6 - 8 July 2010
Venue: Byron Bay Beach Resort
Contact: Byron Bay Writers Centre, Director Jeni Caffin (02) 6685 5115
www.byronbaywritersfestival.com

The Byron Bay Writers Festival had its beginnings in 1997, when a small group of locals led by Chris Hanley wondered whether authors might accept an invitation to spend a winter's weekend in Byron Bay. They did, and an audience of two hundred locals enjoyed a gathering of fifty Australian writers. Since then, the Festival has grown from a single venue event to fill four huge marquees and venues around town and sells 45,000 individual tickets. The guest list now numbers more than one hundred and over the years the most significant and respected contemporary Australian writers have participated through lectures, lunches, panels, conversations, launches and readings.

The focus of the program is firmly on Australian writing, with recognition of our physical place in the world through the inclusion of Indonesian and Asian authors. The Byron Bay Writers Festival enjoys a close relationship with the Ubud Writers and Readers Festival and believes that through words and ideas, bridges are formed that cross cultures and schisms. Fundamentally, the Festival provides a forum for intelligent discussion and guests are invited to address the issues that matter to them as writers and which necessarily concern us all. It is a celebration of the vitality of thought and creativity with a healthy emphasis on fun.

The Tropical Fruits New Year's Festival is a four day queer celebration.

The New Year’s Eve Party and the New Year’s Day Recovery Party are held at the Lismore Showgrounds, transformed by hundreds of volunteers to reflect our own unique culture. Visitors can take in the whole experience at on-site camping facilities. Features of the New Year's Eve party are two large dance spaces with top Australian and International DJs and a more relaxed, dance experience can be found at the alternative Chill Space and at midnight on New Year's Eve there is a spectacular fireworks display. On New Year's Day you can rejuvenate at our Pool Party held at the conveniently located Lismore Baths, booked exclusively for Tropical Fruits. Then, as the sun sets, head back to the Showgrounds, enjoy a BBQ and chat with the volunteers at the Recovery Party.

We showcase artists, musicians and crafts-people in our Art Show and Cabaret. This year you can also take in some films at the Queer Fruits film Festival, showing in Lismore's Star Court Theatre.

New Years Eve Fireworks at Twin Towns, Central Salt Park & Casuarina at 9pm and midnight.

There are also New Years Eve Celebrations in Lennox Head, Byron Bay and Lismore. See Council websites for further information.
